.I had a friend ask me recently "What Kessler Strings wedding has been your favorite so far?" and I really couldn't answer. It was like asking me who is my favorite kid. What came to mind were clients that brought to me new and different ideas, the collaboration and also magical, sweet and sometimes completely unplanned moments in their ceremonies. There is so much pressure to making it a "perfect day" - and its just not realistic. But it almost always is a beautiful day, with the unplanned making for the best stories and memories after. My unplanned wedding experience? After arriving at our ceremony site (Newfields, the Garden Terrace), my groom and his best man, already dressed in khaki wedding suits, decided they needed undershirts. Yes, of course, one hour before your wedding, you do these things if you are my husband! Let's just say its true that opposites attract. Had I known, I would have made him pick them up at the department store 5 minutes from our house a week before. So, my husband-to-be leaves in search of undershirts. Time passes and I get pulled aside for pre-wedding pictures. He is not around and I start to think "these are A LOT of pictures of just me... what is going on?" Finally, about TEN minutes before the wedding, my sister breaks the news to me that his car broke down and he was stranded. No one was telling me because, well, no one knew where he was for a while because he had also forgotten his cell phone and they didn't want to stress out an already jittery bride. I just bust out laughing. In his wedding attire, he was stranded at a big and busy intersection near downtown Indianapolis. He then paid some guy twenty bucks to help him get his car out of the way (who was definitely taking advantage of the situation of a man going to be late for his wedding - I believe this was the negotiated rate). Meanwhile, best man, sent to go find him, stumbles upon this scene: bridegroom getting honked at by a city bus and all the the traffic he was blocking. Now, its five minutes before our outdoor garden wedding and no sign of the groom. It starts to rain. My guests themselves are starting to bring chairs inside themselves and I say “HOLD UP. WE'RE GOING TO WAIT.” And of course, no one is going to challenge a definitely on edge bride with no groom in sight. So, we keep waiting - the wedding party is lining up because still no husband to be, but should be any minute. Groom walks in just then to get in line, a bit rumpled and flustered and I get to laugh at him and kiss him. The rain has stopped and we begin to walk out to the garden. As we our saying our vows, the clouds part and the sun beams down. And the rest of the evening was the most beautiful, magical summer June night you can imagine. Lest you think that perhaps we were dealing with a potential run away groom...after our reception, we got a ride with the best man to the broken down car that would still not start! And as we left for our mini-moon a week later after its repaired, the car broke down again a block our two from our house!!!! I drove instead. And yes, he bought a new car after that. Categories
