Kessler Strings and friends were delighted to join Roberts Park Methodist Church for their performance of Saint Saens-Christmas Oratorio last Sunday. It is a magnificent work that we greatly enjoyed playing in an equally magnificent setting.
Performing the Saint-Seans Oratorio was a special treat for all of us. Even though we have had countless holiday music performances, it was a first performance for most of us with this choir, organ and orchestra piece. It is such a thrill to encounter new works like this and especially one that is so lush and written in a more rich, romantic style than many of the more commonly performed Bach or Handel oratorios. Almost equally exciting was to play in such a gorgeous setting – if you get a chance to attend a service or even visit the inside of Roberts Park Methodist – you will see how special it is. High vaulted ceilings beautifully painted, heavy wood paneling with enough light pouring in lends an inspiration atmosphere. And this time of year, two giant and brightly light Christmas trees adorn the altar platform while the sanctuary is decorated with plenty of evergreen boughs, wreaths and red bows, adding a festive Christmas spirit. No matter what your beliefs are, this time of year, there always seems to be a sound track no matter where you go to set the mood – and the wide range of complex emotions that go along with this time of year. And no performance like this can be complete without a mention of the members of this very special congregation– dedicated to service and social justice. Offering a traditional Christian service, this is a place for you if you might be seeking a meaningful sense of solace and connection. Many many thanks for John Morrow and his crew for having the idea and support to give this performance. This is Kessler Strings second time working with John (we met earlier working together on a wedding at the church). We have greatly enjoyed the partnership! It wouldn’t be the holidays without music.
